Abstract

Gender transformation, transformation, body swap, reincarnation, and possession regularly appear beside one another in Chinese- and Japanese-language web fiction. Kakuyomu’s July 2026 search surface for TSF 入れ替わり still lists dozens of works whose tags combine TSF, 入れ替わり (swap), and 女体化 (female-body transformation). A Shōsetsuka ni Narō work published the same month combines TSF, 性転換, 入れ替わり, and reincarnation language in its keywords. Bilibili search surfaces for transformation fiction and body-swap fiction likewise place gender transformation, transformation, body exchange, and system-driven change inside neighboring discovery paths (Kakuyomu 2026; Shōsetsuka ni Narō 2026a; Bilibili 2026a; Bilibili 2026b). These labels share a discovery ecology while controlling different variables inside a story.

This guide proposes a five-layer continuity matrix for readers, editors, researchers, and Agents: (1) bodily carrier, (2) acting viewpoint, (3) memory and skills, (4) social identity and relationship records, and (5) reversibility and control. Each mechanism event can be coded as a mapping from a pre-event state to a post-event state. Transformation usually preserves one acting subject across bodily states. Body swap crosses two or more acting viewpoints into one another’s bodies. Reincarnation carries selected continuity across death, birth, or world boundaries. Possession turns a host body into an interface shared, overlaid, or contested by multiple agents. Technological redesign and virtual embodiment make bodily change programmable through versions, permissions, devices, operators, and repeatable procedures. A single work can combine several mechanisms, so the most stable unit of analysis is the event, followed by the recurring topology produced across a whole work.

The matrix extends the bodily state–character continuity–social memory model used in our previous Ranma ½ case study. Research on body ownership and agency shows that first-person perspective, visual-tactile synchrony, movement, ownership, and control can vary in related yet separable ways. Narrative-identity research adds memory, habits, and self-story across time (Petkova & Ehrsson 2008; Kilteni, Groten & Slater 2012; Kalckert & Ehrsson 2012; Singer 2004). Once these fields are separated, Ranma ½, Freaky Friday, your name., The Saga of Tanya the Evil, and current web TSF can occupy one comparative grid while keeping their structural differences visible.

1. Research question: when a story says “the body changed,” what actually moved?

Genre labels are excellent tools for finding material. Mechanism fields are stronger tools for comparing scenes. A reader who searches TSF, 性転換, 入れ替わり, or body swap usually wants a neighborhood of related works. Platforms organize discovery around that behavior. Kakuyomu’s 2026 page combines TSF and 入れ替わり in both query and work tags. A long-running Shōsetsuka ni Narō creator guide separately describes swap, possession, reincarnation, and surgery or technological alteration as writing patterns, while a new 2026 story again mixes several of those labels (Kakuyomu 2026; Shōsetsuka ni Narō 2018; Shōsetsuka ni Narō 2026a).

Inside a story, the distinctions become concrete. In Ranma ½, hot and cold water switch bodily state while memory, martial skill, goals, and major relationships travel with Ranma across the switch (Ranma Project 2026a; Ranma Project 2026b). Disney’s Freaky Friday places a mother and daughter in one another’s bodies, so two acting viewpoints migrate at once and each person has to inhabit the other’s school, family, or work position (Disney 2003; Disney 2018). Yen Press describes The Saga of Tanya the Evil through a protagonist reborn as an orphaned girl with memories of a previous life: continuity crosses a life boundary and lands inside a new age, body, family history, nation, and military order (Yen Press 2017). Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout combines transport to another world with a female bodily transformation, and Seven Seas continues to publish the series in 2026 (Seven Seas 2022; Seven Seas 2026).

The research question is therefore practical: when a work is called transformation, body swap, reincarnation, or possession, how can one shared schema describe what persists and what is remapped? The answer is the five-layer matrix. A mechanism name records the causal device that fires. The five fields record where important properties go. Used together, they preserve community classification while adding enough precision for cross-work analysis.

2. Materials and method: model a mechanism as a before-and-after mapping

The evidence base has four parts. First, official work and publisher sources from Shogakukan, the current Ranma ½ production, VIZ, Disney, GKIDS, Yen Press, Seven Seas, and Kodansha establish representative premises and current circulation (Shogakukan 2026; VIZ 2026; Disney 2003; GKIDS 2026a; Yen Press 2017; Seven Seas 2026; Kodansha 2026). Second, public 2026 creator and platform pages from Bilibili, Kakuyomu, Shōsetsuka ni Narō, and note show how 性転換/TSF/入れ替わり/転生 remain active discovery and writing vocabularies (Bilibili 2026a; Kakuyomu 2026; Shōsetsuka ni Narō 2026a; Manami 2026a; Saitō 2026).

Third, body-ownership, agency, and virtual-embodiment research provides unusually precise distinctions. Petkova and Ehrsson’s full-body swap illusion, Kilteni and colleagues’ embodiment framework, Maselli and Slater’s decomposition of full-body ownership, and Kalckert and Ehrsson’s separation of ownership from agency all show that “this body feels like mine,” “I control this body,” and “I see from this bodily location” can vary on separable dimensions (Petkova & Ehrsson 2008; Kilteni, Groten & Slater 2012; Maselli & Slater 2013; Kalckert & Ehrsson 2012). Maister and colleagues synthesize how owning another body can affect social cognition, while virtual-body experiments track relationships among appearance, first-person perspective, movement synchrony, and social judgment (Maister et al. 2015; Banakou, Hanumanthu & Slater 2016; González-Franco & Peck 2018).

Fourth, narrative, media, and genre research gives a longer temporal and cultural frame. Singer places narrative identity in the organization of self across time. Busse and Lothian study gender discourse through changing bodies in fan fiction. Berndt, Steinberg, and Cho and colleagues show that categories in anime and popular culture emerge through media form, industrial circulation, and classification practice as well as story content (Singer 2004; Busse & Lothian 2009; Berndt 2018; Steinberg 2012; Cho et al. 2020). Platformization research helps explain why a work can carry several discovery labels at once: labels participate in search, recommendation, community recognition, and commercial circulation (Poell, Nieborg & van Dijck 2019; van Dijck, Poell & de Waal 2018).

Our unit of analysis is a mechanism event. The situation immediately before the event is state A; the situation immediately after it is state B. We then record five mappings: the bodily carrier; the agent holding the acting viewpoint; memories and skills available after the event; names, family roles, records, reputation, and relationships assigned by the social world; and the trigger, return path, or control authority governing later change. A complete work becomes a sequence of these events, and repeated events reveal its characteristic mechanism topology.

3. The five-layer continuity matrix

Body-ownership experiments provide a clear analogy for the first two rows. Petkova and Ehrsson used first-person visual perspective and synchronized stimulation to induce an illusion that another body belonged to the participant. Heydrich and colleagues used virtual-reality techniques that could produce visual capture involving two body locations. Braun and colleagues review agency and ownership as distinct senses (Petkova & Ehrsson 2008; Heydrich et al. 2013; Braun et al. 2018). Fiction has a much wider design space, yet the experimental vocabulary suggests a powerful analytic habit: track body, viewpoint, and control in separate columns.

The third row separates memory and competence from a broad label such as consciousness. A character can preserve autobiographical memory while encountering unfamiliar musculature. Another can gain procedural tendencies, language patterns, or supernatural capabilities attached to a new carrier. Singer’s narrative-identity framework emphasizes self-story across time; The Saga of Tanya the Evil makes previous-life memory an explicit bridge into a new life, giving a clean example of memory continuity alongside changes in body, age, and institutional identity (Singer 2004; Yen Press 2017).

The fourth row extends the “social memory” layer from our Ranma ½ study. After an acting subject enters a new bodily state, forms of address, attraction, rivalry, records, and institutional routines govern the next interaction. Research on role language and visual presentation likewise shows how voice, endings, script, costume, and appearance index social roles quickly (Kinsui 2018; Robertson 2017; Winge 2006). The social-identity row therefore includes both formal records and other characters’ mental models of who this person is.

The fifth row controls narrative tempo. Hot and cold water give Ranma ½ a high-frequency, low-cost switch. Freaky Friday organizes its crisis around a bounded swap and a route toward restoration. Reincarnation often places another bodily reset far beyond the immediate story horizon. Technological bodies and virtual embodiment naturally invite versions, permissions, backup, duplication, and remote operation. Reversibility is simultaneously mechanism engineering and a major determinant of a character’s risk budget.

4. Transformation: one acting viewpoint persists across bodily states

A basic transformation topology is A-agent/A-body → A-agent/A'-body. The acting viewpoint and much of memory persist while bodily state changes. Ranma ½ supplies a highly legible reversible form: cold and hot water switch bodily states, while the official character page puts martial succession, engagement to Akane, and the water-triggered condition inside one character profile (Ranma Project 2026a; Ranma Project 2026b). Shogakukan and VIZ likewise present the mechanism as a durable feature of the series (Shogakukan 2026; VIZ 2026).

This topology foregrounds the question, “How does an existing plan continue through a new set of bodily conditions?” Bodily state can change sharply while acting viewpoint and memory remain strongly continuous. Social identity becomes mixed: some relationships follow the continuing person, while other characters reclassify the visible body. The earlier three-layer model described this as cyclical body time, continuous character time, and accumulative social time. The five-layer matrix separates acting viewpoint, memory and skill, and control so the same structure can travel to many other works.

Technological redesign can share the same topology. When an acting subject preserves viewpoint and memory while surgery, prosthetics, genetic intervention, a virtual avatar, or a remote body changes the visible carrier, the event still has a “continuous subject–revised body” structure. Kodansha’s continuing publication of The Ghost in the Shell keeps cyborg bodies, networks, and personhood at the center of a major cyberpunk lineage. Virtual-embodiment studies show in experimental settings that avatar appearance and sensorimotor mapping can alter body experience and social judgment (Kodansha 2026; González-Franco & Peck 2018; Banakou, Hanumanthu & Slater 2016). “Technology” names the causal device; the transformation topology describes continuity.

5. Body swap: two acting viewpoints cross into one another’s carriers

The simplest body-swap topology is A-agent/A-body + B-agent/B-body → A-agent/B-body + B-agent/A-body. Its defining structural feature is simultaneous redistribution: both bodies remain active in the story world while two viewpoints move. Disney’s official page for the 2003 Freaky Friday describes Tess and Anna as trapped inside one another’s bodies; the 2018 version likewise centers a magical mother-daughter swap (Disney 2003; Disney 2018).

Reciprocal exchange makes bodily recognition and social identity collide continuously. When A enters B’s body, the surrounding world initially responds to B’s face, name, family, calendar, and obligations. A’s memory and goals originate in another life history. The social-identity row therefore carries much of the plot pressure: school, workplace, family, romantic partners, devices, and accounts can all continue to recognize a body or name while the acting viewpoint carries a different intention through those systems.

your name. adds a distinct temporal architecture. GKIDS continues to circulate Makoto Shinkai’s film and is marking its tenth anniversary in 2026 with a new 4K release and theatrical return (GKIDS 2026a; GKIDS 2026b). The film combines a male-female body exchange with temporal displacement, local catastrophe, and memory loss. Event-level coding first captures the body swap, while time displacement enters as an additional narrative variable. Separating events preserves the contribution of each device when a work layers several mechanisms.

Current platform evidence shows that swap remains a live writing vocabulary. Kakuyomu’s TSF 入れ替わり results contain works tagged simultaneously with TSF, swap, and female-body transformation. In May 2026, note creator Saitō Mao published a short comic explicitly tagged 入れ替わり and 男女入れ替わり, centered on a teacher and student changing bodies (Kakuyomu 2026; Saitō 2026). Tag overlap describes discovery ecology; the swap topology describes character mapping.

6. Reincarnation: selected continuity crosses a life-history boundary

A reincarnation event can be represented as A-agent/A-body/A-social-history → A'-agent/B-body/B-social-history, with each work deciding which properties connect A to A’. Memory, personality tendency, or a soul marker often provides the bridge. Body, age, family, legal identity, and social relationships begin from a new life point. Yen Press describes Tanya as reborn as a destitute orphaned girl while retaining memories of a previous life, placing memory and skill at the center of continuity (Yen Press 2017).

Japanese web fiction in 2026 shows how readily labels can combine around this structure. A July Shōsetsuka ni Narō work titled TS転生したので、男に戻してもらいにジェンダークリニックへ行った uses keywords including TSF, gender transformation, and swap. Its premise has a forty-year-old engineer die and awaken in the body of an eighteen-year-old girl, while the previous body has already been cremated and the host girl’s status becomes a narrative question (Shōsetsuka ni Narō 2026a). Death, bodily occupation, memory continuity, host consciousness, and later medical choices all participate in one construction.

The matrix lets a researcher code that construction as a sequence. Death and rebirth create the life-history break. Entry into a pre-existing young woman’s body introduces a host relation adjacent to possession or replacement. Previous-life memory keeps the third row continuous. A later medical route introduces another bodily-change event. The creator’s own TS転生 label remains valuable, while the matrix states exactly which fields move at each stage.

Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout provides another combination. Seven Seas describes two ordinary male friends transported to a fantasy world, with one transformed into a beautiful woman, and the publisher continues the series in 2026 (Seven Seas 2022; Seven Seas 2026). World transfer and bodily gender transformation occur as neighboring operations. Event coding treats world position as an environmental variable, bodily change in the first row, and the friends’ continuing memories and relationship in the third and fourth rows.

7. Possession: the host body becomes a shared, overlaid, or contested interface

Possession centers a different question: how many agents occupy one bodily carrier, and how is control distributed? A simple topology is A-agent + B-body/B-agent → A-agent@B-body + B-agent, followed by a state describing B as co-present, dormant, observing, alternating, or fading. A Shōsetsuka ni Narō TSF writing guide lists 憑依 separately from swap and reincarnation and explicitly describes both a dormant-host pattern and a coexisting-host pattern, providing clear creator-community evidence for the distinction (Shōsetsuka ni Narō 2018).

This mechanism pushes acting viewpoint and control to the foreground. Bodily appearance may remain stable, so the social world continues to recognize B. The internal agent arrangement changes. Dialogue, internal monologue, access to memories, and motor authority become the evidence that differentiates stages. Experimental work separating agency and ownership offers a useful analogy: an embodied subject can experience a body as located at the self while action and ownership judgments vary along distinct dimensions (Kalckert & Ehrsson 2012; Braun et al. 2018).

Possession also supports gradual control. A story can let A first observe B’s senses, then gain partial movement, then contest whole-body control, then gain access to memory, then negotiate shared action. Each stage receives its own matrix row. That event-level approach works particularly well for serialized web fiction, where a single possession label can cover a control topology that changes over dozens of chapters.

8. Technological redesign and virtual embodiment: change becomes a designed system

Technological transformation covers medicine, surgery, prosthetics, cloning, remote bodies, and digital avatars. Its shared narrative property is parameterization: version, permission, device, operator, material, recovery path, and copying capacity can become story variables. The reversibility-and-control row therefore expands from a single magical trigger into a system.

Virtual-reality research already offers a vocabulary for that system. Kilteni and colleagues distinguish body ownership, self-location, and agency within embodiment. González-Franco and Peck developed a standardized avatar-embodiment questionnaire. Banakou and colleagues showed that embodiment in a virtual body with different visible social traits could produce sustained changes in implicit social cognition (Kilteni, Groten & Slater 2012; González-Franco & Peck 2018; Banakou, Hanumanthu & Slater 2016). These studies measure real experiments; fiction can reuse the variable distinctions while adding backup, copies, remote embodiment, identity transfer, and other speculative operations.

Current Japanese creator practice also combines bodily technology with other mechanisms. Manami’s 2026 note series 女性ホルモンペレット 人生のリセット places a plan for hormone-driven feminization beside an accident and body exchange, and its series organization repeatedly uses gender-transformation and swap vocabulary (Manami 2026a; Manami 2026b). Technology and exchange therefore occur as different events inside one work. Event-level coding records the planned physiological change separately from the later migration of acting viewpoint.

9. Competing explanations: genre boundaries emerge from three systems at once

Multiple labels on one work can be explained through three interacting systems. The first is a narrative causal system: a story needs rules for how bodies change, how viewpoints move, how memory persists, and how another transition occurs. The five-layer matrix primarily describes this system. The second is a platform discovery system: broad and narrow tags overlap because they help readers discover adjacent content. Current Kakuyomu, Bilibili, and Shōsetsuka ni Narō surfaces all display this overlap (Kakuyomu 2026; Bilibili 2026a; Shōsetsuka ni Narō 2026a). The third is a community interpretation system: creators and readers group works according to the situations they value, producing collections around TSF, gender transformation, female-body transformation, swap, and reincarnation.

Anime genre research also supports a multidimensional account of classification. Cho and colleagues show how genre information can mix themes, audiences, forms, and narrative properties. Berndt emphasizes anime as both representative object and media form. Steinberg follows characters through manga, animation, merchandising, and promotion (Cho et al. 2020; Berndt 2018; Steinberg 2012). The mechanism matrix therefore claims one specific analytical job: describing narrative structure. Platform tags keep their discovery and community-language roles.

A second interpretive tradition reads changing-body fiction through gender norms, desire, and self-expression. Busse and Lothian’s fan-fiction research, Woods’s study of cross-dressing and gender performativity in manga, and Ho’s work on genderless styles in Japan all show that altered embodiment can organize substantial gender discourse (Busse & Lothian 2009; Woods 2015; Ho 2021). The matrix gives such interpretation finer textual evidence. A researcher can first state how body, viewpoint, memory, social relationships, and control change, then show how those transformations structure gendered experience. Cultural interpretation gains a traceable event model underneath it.

10. A reusable coding workflow

A chapter, episode, or key scene can serve as the smallest unit. First, write state A and state B. Second, fill the five fields. Third, record the trigger and number of participating agents. Fourth, record who in the surrounding world knows about the change and who continues to act on the previous identity model. Fifth, record whether another change depends on character choice, environmental accident, or an outside operator. Finally, attach the community mechanism labels already used by the work, platform, or readers.

A cold-water event in Ranma ½ can be coded as: transformation; one acting viewpoint; body A→A'; memory/skills persist; social recognition partly reclassifies; hot water provides a reverse path. A Freaky Friday-style event becomes: body swap; two viewpoints cross; both bodies persist; memories follow the agents; social identity initially follows bodies; restoration depends on the story's trigger. A Tanya-style event becomes: reincarnation; life-history break; new body and institutional identity; previous-life memory persists; return is pushed beyond the immediate story horizon. A possession event becomes: possession; host body persists; agent set changes; control is allocated by stage.

The same format can support an Agent-built fiction index. A machine can extract event-level facts first and let human review settle community labels. A database can separate a Work table from a MechanismEvent table. Works hold author, platform, year, and self-described genre. Events hold the five mappings, trigger, chapter location, and evidence sentence. A work that combines swap, reincarnation, and technological redesign naturally accumulates several event records, while the search layer can still aggregate them into reader-facing TSF or transformation entry points.

Conclusion

Public creator platforms in 2026 show that gender transformation, TSF, transformation, swap, and reincarnation remain active discovery vocabularies. Their overlap reflects how genre ecosystems operate across narrative causation, platform discovery, and community interpretation. The five-layer continuity matrix makes narrative causation independently comparable.

Bodily carrier says which body currently enters the world. Acting viewpoint says who perceives and decides. Memory and skills say which past remains usable. Social identity says whom institutions and relationships recognize. Reversibility and control say how another change can occur and who can initiate it. Transformation, body swap, reincarnation, possession, and technological redesign can therefore share one analytic frame while retaining their characteristic structures.

This moves GenderLibs’s transformation-fiction program from a single-work case study toward a cross-work method. The matrix can next support research on Chinese web-fiction platform history, relationship categories such as 变百 and 变嫁, clusters of body-swap fiction, and automated genre extraction. Public community labels can keep correcting researcher-built categories as those vocabularies evolve. The matrix here encodes fictional narrative events; research on real-world gender identities continues through its own first-person contexts and social-science evidence.
